Autodesk Identity Is Rolling Out Across GCPay

Signing in to GCPay is about to get simpler, more secure, and more flexible.

Over the coming months, we're rolling out Autodesk Identity Manager, a major update to the GCPay login experience. The rollout has already begun, so some users will see the new sign-in experience today, while others will transition gradually over the coming months.

With Autodesk Identity Manager, your GCPay account will be tied to your email address instead of a username or individual company account. That means you'll only need one login to access every company you're associated with in GCPay. A built-in company picker makes it easy to switch between organizations without logging out and back in.

When the update reaches your organization, you'll complete a quick, one-time setup to begin signing in with your email address, if you're not already doing so.

If you work with multiple companies in GCPay, nothing changes there. You'll continue to have access to every company you're authorized to use, now through a single identity.

Stronger Security, Your Way

Autodesk Identity Manager also introduces enhanced security features and new authentication options designed to make signing in both easier and more secure.

Passkeys let you sign in without a password using a supported device. They're fast to set up and provide strong protection against phishing attacks.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) only needs to be configured once for your Autodesk Identity, protecting access across every GCPay company you're connected to. For sensitive actions, such as adding new bank accounts for electronic payments, GCPay can automatically prompt treasury users to enable MFA if it hasn't already been configured.

Single Sign-On (SSO) support is also expanding. GCPay will support OAuth and Microsoft Entra, allowing your organization to sign in using the same credentials employees already use across other business applications, eliminating the need for a separate GCPay password. This capability is currently in beta and will become more broadly available in the coming months.

Looking ahead, GCPay will also support signing in through Autodesk Forma, creating an even more connected experience across Autodesk products. This integration is on the roadmap and will be available in a future release.

Autodesk Identity Manager is more than a new way to sign in. It provides stronger security, simplifies access across multiple companies, and lays the foundation for a more connected Autodesk Forma ecosystem in the future.

Easily Manage Retainage on Subcontracts with GCPay 

Retainage (also called retention) is a portion of a subcontractor's payment that is intentionally withheld until work is completed or certain project milestones are met. It's used as a financial incentive to ensure the subcontractor finishes the job and corrects any defects.

GCPay makes managing retainage easy by allowing for changes at a line item during the SOV approval, establishing a capped retainage on all pay applications, and releasing retention on multiple SOVs in one step. If a general contractor needs to create or edit retainage on a line item, simply click the drop-down arrow on the “Retainage Type” and select “Variable Retainage”. Then, scroll to the Line Items section and make your adjustments in the retainage column.

* If you cannot edit the Retainage Type, you will need to unlock retention for the Schedule of Values. How do I unlock retainage for a subcontractor SOV?

Capped Retainage is a retention strategy in which the user can establish a retainage rate for the first 50% of a contract and another rate for the second 50% of a contract. Capped Retainage is sometimes stipulated by state law. As a best practice, Capped Retainage should be applied on the first application for payment (AFP) against a subcontractor's schedule of values (SOV).

* The Capped retainage feature must first be enabled by the GCPay Support

Team. Please contact support to activate the feature.

To enable Capped retainage on a subcontractor's SOV, follow these steps:

1. Create a new AFP

2. Click the drop-down arrow on the retainage type and choose from the following:

3. Select Capped Retainage

4. Establish your retainage requirements for the first 50% and last 50% of the contract

In this example, 10% retainage will be withheld for the first 50% of the contract.

Once 50% of the contract is billed, no further retainage will be held. GCPay will automatically adjust for change orders that increase the scope of a contract.

The “Bulk Release” feature allows general contractors to release retainage (retention) on multiple SOVs in just a few clicks. Doing so will create the retainage invoice(s) on behalf of the subcontractor and trigger any associated lien waivers in the process. This eliminates the need for subcontractors to bill for their retention and provides the general contractor with greater control over the timing of (perceived) retainage release.

*Bulk release is a feature that must first be enabled by GCPay customer support

GCs who enable the feature will see a Bulk Release Retainage button in the header of the Contractor(s) Schedule of Values table on the Project Overview tab. Clicking this button will prompt the user to select which contracts they would like to release retainage for, after which a retention invoice will automatically be created, approved, and available for export to your ERP platform (for integrated customers).

Retainage: What Every GC Should Know Right Now 

Quick heads up on something worth keeping on your radar.

Retainage is one of those things that runs smoothly until it doesn't. The good news is that with a little attention, it's easy to stay ahead of. States are updating their rules and tightening timelines, so knowing where you stand matters more than ever. New York's 5% Retainage Law is a good example, capping how much can be held and requiring release within 30 days of final approval. More states are following suit.

The relationship side is just as important. Paying subs on time builds the kind of trust that keeps your best trades coming back. When retainage is managed well, it protects those relationships and keeps cash flowing in the right direction for everyone on the project.
