In this communication, we’re taking a closer look at a powerful GCPay feature you might not know about—but could really benefit from.

Why ePayment Matters to Your Construction Finance Workflow

As GCPay now moves over $6 billion dollars of payment applications via the ePayment annually, learn how this feature can help you better manage your subcontractor invoice payments.

This feature has become one of the greatest areas of value required from prospective new general contractors looking at evaluating GCPay. General contractors are moving toward electronic payments for subcontractor invoices because construction payment workflows are unusually expensive, slow, and difficult to control when they rely on paper checks and manual processes.

The biggest drivers are:

  1. Faster subcontractor payments. ACH and other electronic methods eliminate printing, mailing, delivery, and deposit delays. That matters to subs because cash flow is often tight between payroll, materials, equipment, and retainage.
  2. Lower administrative cost. Paper checks require someone to prepare the payment, obtain approvals/signatures, mail it, handle lost checks, reconcile it, and respond to subcontractor inquiries. Electronic workflows automate much of that work.
  3. Better visibility and reconciliation. Electronic payments can connect the payment directly to the subcontract, invoice, project, cost code, and accounting record. Finance teams can more easily answer, what was paid? When? To whom? For which project?
  4. Less check fraud. Construction companies can issue very large numbers of checks to many different businesses. Stolen checks, altered payees, counterfeit checks, and check-washing create meaningful exposure. Moving away from paper reduces several of those attack vectors, although electronic payments introduce their own controls around account changes and phishing.
  5. More scalable AP operations. A GC paying 50 subcontractors can manage manual processes reasonably well. A large GC paying thousands of subcontractors and suppliers across hundreds of projects has a much stronger incentive to automate.
  6. Better subcontractor experience. Subs generally care about two things: when am I getting paid and where is my money? Electronic payment systems can provide payment notifications and status visibility instead of forcing subcontractors to call or email the GC's accounting team.
  7. Remote and distributed operations. Construction happens in the field, while accounting may be centralized elsewhere. Electronic approvals and payments don't require checks to physically move between an office, executives, accounting staff, and subcontractors.
  8. Opportunity to monetize payments. This is an increasingly important business consideration. Depending on the payment method and platform, electronic payments can generate rebates or other economics for the payer or payment provider. That can turn AP from purely an administrative cost into a source of financial value.

There's also a broader strategic shift happening: the payment itself is becoming part of the construction software workflow rather than the final step outside of it. Once the GC already manages contracts, compliance, invoices, lien waivers, approvals, and accounting integrations digitally, issuing a paper check at the very end becomes the odd manual step.

For construction specifically, that creates a compelling end state:

Subcontract → invoice/pay app → approval → compliance/lien waiver → payment → reconciliation

…all within one connected workflow.

That is why construction payments are particularly interesting for companies that already own the upstream project-management or financial workflow: the value isn't simply replacing a check with ACH; it's connecting the movement of money to all of the construction data and controls surrounding that payment.
